Each month, Podcast Review’s staff offers recommendations on the best new podcasts to listen to. Here are our favorites for August:
In the Dark returns with a third season that will intrigue fans of longform investigative journalism. The award-winning team fronted by Madeleine Baran takes on the case of a man in Haditha, Iraq, whose entire family was killed and the culprits never punished. Twenty-three people were killed that day, the crime willfully ignored. Predictably, the US military knows more than it is letting on, and it isn’t long before this story feels more like a Kathryn Bigelow movie than a real event. Is there any crime a podcast can’t solve? Tune into new episodes of In the Dark to find out.
We’re approaching half a century since the start of the AIDS crisis. Resurrection, an independent podcast about the stories of those who fought back against the disease, returns for a poignant second season. It tells the history of the early response to AIDS in New York and San Francisco, years before ACT UP was founded. Each episode focuses on a different person’s story, including a doctor, a playwright, and an activist. If you’re a fan of recent American history and archival audio, Resurrection isn’t to be missed.
In search of the latest NFL gossip? Scoop City is a new podcast hosted by The Athletic’s senior NFL insider Dianna Russini and former NFL player Chase Daniel. It’s just the ticket for unmatched access to the buzz on and off the field – and you don’t even need to know who Taylor Swift’s boyfriend is to appreciate the game insights on offer. This is a sports podcast that doesn’t take itself too seriously. After all, it’s only football. Stay in the know with Scoop City every Tuesday and Friday.
