Every month, we receive dozens of submissions to our pitch portal about new shows that otherwise wouldn't have made it across our desks. While we like to cover big releases, including this month's exciting Goalhanger launch, it's important to us that we throw some indie podcasts into the mix. Going forward, every edition of our monthly recommendations will include at least one independent show. This month, it's a movie podcast.
Stole My Line
Stole My Line bills itself as "the only outdoor movie podcast" out there. As far as differentiators go, we've heard worse in this oversaturated genre. That said, there's something highly soothing about watching hosts Grant and Drew – your typical all-American boys – lounge by the fireside to discuss the last film they went to see. It's the sort of ambient, ASMR-adjacent podcast content we've long suspected would manifest during the rush to video. We're fans.
Grant and Drew's film analysis isn't academic. It's the sort of well-grounded opinion you might hear from Letterboxd obsessed mate. Stole My Line is casual listening, but that's the point. Their discussions of films like Tony and The Dog Stars don't demand your full attention, but instead provide thoughtful takes and an innovative rating system that will really appeal to a younger, video-first demographic. Keep going, boys!
Bear Hunt
On September 10th, Goalhanger will launch a new 10-part audio drama called Bear Hunt, an geopolitical thriller that follows fictional mission to assassinate one of the world’s most powerful and heavily protected leaders. The story begins with 350 British civilian deaths at the hands of Russia, and a hapless Prime Minister (could be any of them) plays his hand as a regime threatens to topple.
Goalhanger, more famous for hit shows like The Rest is Politics and The Rest is History, already has one very successful scripted fiction podcast called Sherlock and Co., and Bear Hunt marks a renewed interest in this genre known for fandom cultivation and IP generation. Buried Evidence
Listeners love history podcasts. They also adore true crime. Put them together? It's a match made in Lucy Worsley's idea of heaven. Buried Evidence is a brand new show that explores historical true crime through the ages with the help of best-selling historian Rebecca Rideal and archaeologist Professor Raksha Dave.
The weekly podcast will go as far back as prehistoric "crimes," such as uncovering the fate of Otzi the Iceman from 3300BCE. It will also examine cases that have become embedded in the popular imagination, like the Salem Witch Trials. Buried Evidence launches September 4th.
